Kelly Brinkman, Jenny Johnson, Brian Melendez and Jaclyn Swords crossed the finish line with times of 3:04:45 (Brinkman), 3:36:56 (Johnson), 3:56:54 (Melendez) and 3:59:18 (Swords).
Brinkman placed third in the non-registered runner category for women and seventh place overall for women. She was presented with an award following the race.
The challenging 26.2 mile course guides runners through the heart of Izumi City, and a series of four steep hills in last five miles of the course.
“It was an experience I will cherish for the rest of my life,” says Swords who competed in the race and serves on the BSCO board. “We were all astounded by the generosity and hospitality of the Japanese people during our eight-day trip.”
The Bloomington Sister City Organization has partnered with the Izumi International Exchange Association to provide local marathon runners the opportunity to compete in the respective city’s marathon. This year marked the 20th anniversary of the Senshu marathon and the organization’s successful partnership.
