LOS ANGELES (Nov. 8, 2017) — The Trump administration on Tuesday announced its decision to terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Nicaragua and determined that more information is necessary regarding the TPS designation of Honduras.
Asian Americans Advancing Justice, an affiliation of five Asian American civil rights organizations, released the following statement:
“Time and time again, this administration has shown no regard or compassion for immigrant and refugee communities. Its decision to terminate the TPS designation for Nicaragua is heartless. We implore this administration to reconsider this decision by January 5, 2019. In addition, we urge the administration to examine the dire conditions in Honduras and extend TPS beyond the automatic six-month extension. DHS must also take into account the recent hurricanes that have ravaged Haiti and the Caribbean and extend TPS for Haitians an additional 18 months.
Congress must act to provide a permanent solution for these families, many of whom have built their lives and family in the United States and are part of our communities. To strip away protection and the ability of people to provide for themselves and their families is cruel and goes against our values as a country. We will continue to fight for our communities to ensure that immigrants and refugees are treated with dignity and respect.”
