MINNEAPOLIS (March 28, 2017) — Five teens are huddled around a table, sketching a new kind of gallery design. There is a blanket fort. A protest sign-making station. Space for three dimensional sculpture. Interactive art. A film screen.
In Flux: Resist, Heal, Create, an exhibition created by and for youth, is designed to challenge traditional gallery structures by providing participants with both the resources and the space to not only display art, but to make art as well.

“In Flux challenges participants to change the way they engage with a gallery space by allowing them to become an active part of it,” say the exhibition curators.

By adding to a creation wall, making their own protest signs, or spending time in a cozy healing space, In Flux encourages community members to be creators as well as observers both inside and outside the gallery walls. It is a celebration of artwork and art-making that visitors will carry with them beyond the exhibition.

Intermedia Arts’ fourth youth-curated exhibition, In Flux: Resist, Heal, Create is a space for youth to share and to heal within the current context of violence and marginalization happening in the world, specifically violence against Queer, Trans, Femmes, Indigenous and Native Communities, Folks of Color, and many other communities of youth who exist at the intersections of oppressions. In Flux is an immersive art-making experience designed to challenge not only traditional gallery structures, but also systemic oppressions.

The call for artwork submissions to the exhibition closes April 1. The exhibition will be open to the public beginning May 11, with a multi-disciplinary opening reception on May 13. Community members are encouraged to visit the exhibition Mondays from Noon to 6 p.m., Tuesdays-Fridays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from Noon to 5 p.m.
