Survey to Uncover Neglected Needs & Unrealized Potential of California’s Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Youth
WHAT:
The Southeast Asia Resource Action Center and the Asian American and Pacific Islander Boys and Men of Color Coalition Helping Achieve Racial and Gender Equity (AAPI BMoC CHARGE) announce the launch of a groundbreaking statewide survey assessing the experiences and challenges of diverse AAPI youth across California. The results of the survey will illuminate the often overlooked needs and assets of AAPI youth, uncovering patterns of disparities by ethnic subgroup and by gender. Youth from AAPI BMoC CHARGE will present findings from the survey at a hearing with California State Assemblymembers in 2017.
WHY:
Dozens of distinct AAPI subgroups call California home, each with unique histories of immigration, patterns of settlement, socio-economic status, and education and health outcomes. Most data systems lump Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders together, displaying a misleading picture of homogeneity and masking the stories and struggles of smaller AANHPI groups. The AAPI BMoC CHARGE survey will collect and report disaggregated data of AAPI youth to reveal the unique challenges as well as the unrealized assets and potential of diverse communities. The results of the survey will provide policy makers, school administrators, social service providers, and community leaders with important data on the needs and strengths of AAPI youth that can be used to develop targeted, community-driven solutions.
WHO:
AAPI BMoC CHARGE is a multi-ethnic coalition of AAPI-serving community-based organizations throughout California, working together to advocate for solutions to address the challenges they see in their communities, to reveal an accurate picture of who AAPIs are, and to build youth advocacy capacity.
