ST. PAUL (Oct. 21, 2016) — Macalester College has released its November Events Calendar.

Friday, November 4

Mahmoud El-Kati Distinguished Lectureship Series with William Jelani Cobb: “The Half-Life of Freedom: Race and Justice in America Today”

William Jelani Cobb, associate professor of History and Director of the Africana Studies Institute at the University of Connecticut, is this year’s El-Kati Distinguished Lectureship Series keynote speaker. His talk is titled, “The Half-Life of Freedom: Race and Justice in America Today.” Cobb specializes in post-Civil War African American history, 20th-century American politics and the history of the Cold War. Cobb is the author of The Substance of Hope: Barack Obama & the Paradox of Progress (Bloomsbury 2010), and To The Break of Dawn: A Freestyle on the Hip Hop Aesthetic (NYU Press 2007) which was a finalist for the National Award for Arts Writing. He is a recipient of fellowships from the Fulbright and Ford Foundations.

Urinetown: The Musical

Urinetown is a satirical comedy musical that premiered in 2001 on Broadway with music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Hollmann and Greg Kotis, and book by Kotis. It satirizes the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, and municipal politics. The show also parodies musicals such as the Threepenny Opera, The Cradle Will Rock and Les Miserables, and the Broadway musical itself as a form. Director, Harry Waters, Jr. Music director, Adam Baus. Choreographer, Leah Nelson.

Macalester Alumnae Recital: Bethany Battafarano, Emma Lynn, and Johanna Kvam

Three Macalester class of 2013 alumae collaborate in a recital, the culmination of a two-day residency in the Music Department. Bethany Battafarano (soprano) is a Twin Cities-based singer. A member of the Rose Ensemble, she has also performed with The Singers MCA, Minnesota Chorale, Cathedral of St. Paul, and Apollo Master Chorale, and has appeared with Oratory, Elm Ensemble, and First Readings Project. Emma Lynn (soprano) is currently enrolled in a graduate studies program in vocal performance at the University of Oregon. Johanna Kvam (piano) recently received a master’s degree in vocal accompanying at the Peabody Conservatory.

Chopin Society presents pianist Francesco Piemontesi

Italian-Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi first achieved international attention by winning third place at the 2007 Queen Elizabeth Competition in Brussels. In 2012 he was named Best Newcomer at the BBC Music Magazine Awards. Piemontesi has worked with many leading orchestras and conductors in prominent venues in London, Amsterdam, Nee York, Berlin, Zürich, and Vienna. Program: Mozart, Liszt, Schubert and Schnaus.
