ST. PAUL, Min. (Sept. 10, 2016) — Macalestar College has released its October 2016 calendar of events.

23rd Annual International Roundtable examines “Sustainable Cities: Sharing Habitat, Building Resiliency”

The 2016 Macalester International Roundtable (IRT) will seek to cultivate sustainability as a critical-thinking framework and to understand and address existing and emerging social, environmental, and economic challenges in urban areas across the globe. Chris Ward ‘76, one of the plenary speakers, will talk. He is Chief Executive Metro NY, Senior VP at AECOM where he leads strategic growth and profitability of the Design and Consulting Services group in the New York and East Coast region. Ward is the former chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and has been an adjunct professor at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. “The Beginning (Again)” – Chris Willcox Exhibition  – a conversation with Prof. Christina Schmid

As part of art professor Chris Willcox’s exhibition, she will have a conversation about her work with University of Minnesota Prof. Christina Schmid who teaches critical thinking and writing.

Chopin Society presents pianist Sergei Babayan

Armenian-born Sergei Babayan was the first pianist from the former USSR to compete and study in the West after the collapse of the Soviet system. In short order, he took first prizes at the Robert Casadesus (now Cleveland), Hamamatsu, and Scottish International Competitions, and was among the top finishers at the Busoni, Queen Elisabeth, and Honens Competitions. He brings boundless energy and unfettered imagination to a wide range of repertoire. His program includes works by Vladimir Ryabov, Rachmaninoff and Chopin.

Faculty Chamber Concert

Hosted by the Music Department, this concert is part of the Faculty Chamber Concert Series showcasing talented Macalester faculty members. The concert will feature Clea Galhano (recorder) and Jeffrey Thygeson (guitar) performing Astor Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango; Martha Jamsa (flute) and Mindy Eschedor (piano) performing Carl Reinecke’s Sonata “Undine,” op. 167; and Laura Nichols (mezzo-soprano), Chad Topaz (viola), and Christine Dahl (piano) performing Loeffler’s Quatre Poemes, op. 5.
