ANOKA, Minn. (July 18, 2016) — Have you ever considered changing a child’s life by helping them learn to read? The Anoka-Hennepin School District is pleased to be partnering with the Minnesota Reading Corps and is seeking tutors to work with kindergarten through third grade students.
“The Minnesota Reading Corps builds confidence in our youngest readers and promotes a lifetime of good reading strategies,” said Michelle VanDenTop, director of technology and information services.
Here are just a few other reasons to join the Reading Corps mission:
* Almost 25 percent of Minnesota’s third graders do not read at grade level.
* Third grade is critical, as a child shifts from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.”
* Children who read well are more likely to graduate from high school.
Tutors are asked to commit for a year, beginning August 2016. Participants will receive training from the Minnesota Reading Corps and will be supported by a licensed teacher in the school. A monthly stipend, health insurance and compensation toward college costs will also be offered (can also be applied to a relative’s education costs).
“It’s an exciting opportunity to provide an additional layer of support for students that compliments the work we do at the school level to accelerate students’ individual growth in literacy,” said Director of Elementary Curriculum Ranae Case Evenson.
