WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 7, 2016) — OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates applauds the defeat of the Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act (S.3100) and the Stop Illegal Reentry Act (S.2193).
Yesterday, two pieces of anti-immigrant legislation that would remove funding from sanctuary cities and institute a system of federal mandatory minimums for undocumented immigrants were defeated in the Senate. A vote is expected on these two pieces of legislation in the next few days.
“The Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act would have created an environment in which local law enforcement would have lost its advantage against criminals by placing a chokehold on federal funding and eliminating the community trust these departments have spent years building up. The Stop Illegal Reentry Act would have instituted an untenable system of mandatory minimums and resulted in the criminalization and targeting of the entire immigrant population, undocumented or not. These two pieces of legislation, if passed, would have inevitably resulted in a decrease in public safety and further exacerbated the current mass incarceration crisis facing our nation. We applaud the Senate for striking down these dangerous measures and look forward to working with all elected officials to ensure that all immigrants and the communities in which they reside are safe and free from fear,” said Leslie Moe-Kaiser, OCA National President.
