Minneapolis, MN – Winner of the 2014 Sage Award for Outstanding Dance Performance, ROOTED is a celebration of the foundations of Hip Hop. The first and only choreographers’ evening focused exclusively on Hip Hop dance and its roots (African, Latin, Tap, Step, Breaking, Popping, Locking, Toprock, Waacking, House, Old School and New School), ROOTED is celebrating its fifth year.
Created and curated by Maia Maiden, this multifaceted show exhibits the skills and techniques of the finest choreographers in the Twin Cities. ROOTED is a high-energy performance where audience members can share space with Minnesota’s diverse hip hop community featuring old school favorites, up and coming talent, and the women of Hip Hop. ROOTED is the only show of its kind that embraces the history of Hip Hop culture and, for that reason, has sold out every year since its debut.
From its humble beginnings in the Bronx, New York, Hip Hop dance has grown to a worldwide phenomenon. Like ballet or modern dance, Hip Hop is a style that requires hours of training, skill, and technique – but unlike those other dance forms, the artistry of Hip Hop dancers is often overlooked. With Internet dance tutorials available at the click of a button and Hip Hop dance classes taught at local gyms, many overlook or are unaware of the deep socio-political roots and artistry involved in Hip Hop dance.
Like kinesthetic technicians, ROOTED‘s featured choreographers take the stage to illuminate this underrepresented craft. What started as a need for recognizing Hip Hop on the stage, has flourished into a community affair. Join Maia Maiden at Intermedia Arts for ROOTED: Hip Hop Choreographers’ Evening, to learn about the foundations of Hip Hop dance, and its lasting legacy.
Community members wanting to get on stage themselves can take advantage of three opportunities: A post-show dance party on June 10, a sampler class with Angel Adams, Ti-en-T, and Maia Maiden, and a Master Class with Chicago’s Brand1, Boodilla, Stavs and Tempo on June 11.
