SACRAMENTO, Calif. (March 11, 2016) — Lao American Advancement Organization is bringing the 10th Annual Lao Education Conference to Sacramento State University to help Lao youth on March 29th. It’s a free conference for all middle/high school Lao American students in Sacramento City Unified School District or the Twin Rivers Unified School District. Current U.S. Census figures show that Sacramento has the second highest population of Lao in the country, with over 9,814 residents with roots in Laos.This year marks the 40th anniversary that many Lao began their diaspora after the end of the Lao Civil War that ended in December, 1975. This year, the theme for ALEC is “Perseverance: Our Journey to Success.” Lao food, an open mic, inspirational speakers and cultural workshops will be part of the programming.
Founded in 2006, the Lao American Advancement organization coordinates the ALEC (Annual Lao Educational Conference), the Sabaidee Pbeemai LAO FESTIVAL at CalExpo, and the LAAO Scholarship & Culture Night Banquet under the leadership of Dr. Khonepheth Lily Liemthongsamout. Opportunities to volunteer with the organization are still available.
