Minnesota Orchestra trumpeter joins forces with conductor Sarah Hicks and the Minnesota Orchestra for a Valentine’s Day concert of classic love songs


MINNEAPOLIS (Jan. 21, 2016) — In one concert on February 14, Minnesota Orchestra trumpeter Charles Lazarus performs fresh takes on classic love songs in his concert Fly Me to the Moon: Love Songs from the Big Band Era and Beyond. Lazarus is joined onstage by the Minnesota Orchestra, led by Principal Conductor of Live at Orchestra Hall Sarah Hicks, and assisted by two esteemed vocalists and a seasoned rhythm section. The concert will feature beloved Big Band – era standards including Embraceable You, Stardust and Fly Me to the Moon, and new tracks from Lazarus’ newest CD, lovejoy, which he releases at this concert.

The performance of Fly Me to the Moon: Love Songs from the Big Band Era and Beyond takes place at Orchestra Hall, the Minnesota Orchestra’s home in downtown Minneapolis, on Sunday, February 14, at 2 p.m., with ticket prices ranging from $25 to $60. Charles Lazarus, trumpet
Charles Lazarus, a member of the Minnesota Orchestra since 2000, has masterminded several original productions with the Orchestra, serving as soloist, composer and bandleader. Earlier this season, he led the holiday program “Merry and Bright: A Big Brassy Christmas with Charles Lazarus,” and this past spring he soloed in the world premiere of American Nomad, a trumpet concerto composed for him by Steve Heitzeg. His many recordings include the CDs Solo Settings, Zabava and Merry & Bright.

Musicians of Fly Me to the Moon

Tonia Hughes, vocals, has performed at many local and national events, including recent performances with Charles Lazarus and the Minnesota Orchestra. Her vocal style combines elements of gospel, blues, jazz, R&B and worship music. Carin Vagle is a Minneapolis-based vocalist and visual artist. Her current musical collaborations include improvisational sound meditations and a new sacred music project. PianistTommy Barbarella, who has worked extensively with Prince, has also collaborated with such artists as Art Garfunkel and the Backstreet Boys, and has composed award-winning commercial tracks. Bassist Jeff Bailey is active as a performer, composer, producer and educator who has performed with many renowned jazz artists. David Schmalenberger, percussion, performs with nationally renowned artists and is active as a clinician.

Sarah Hicks, the Minnesota Orchestra’s principal conductor of Live at Orchestra Hall, has led a broad range of programs since joining the Orchestra as assistant conductor in 2006. During the 2015-16 season she leads the Orchestra in performances with Ben Folds, Rajaton, Pink Martini and Cirque de la Symphonie, among other artists, as well as Inside the Classics concerts, film music and Scandinavian Christmas concerts.
