I’d like to announce an exciting opportunity for high school musicians to showcase their musical talents, made available through the Minnesota Legacy Amendment’s Art and Cultural Heritage Fund. With Legacy Amendment funding, Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) is launching Minnesota Varsity, a talent competition for classical music students aged 14-18. Vocalists, instrumental soloists and small ensembles are encouraged to submit recordings of their performances online at www.classicalmpr.org/varsity between January 3 and February 15, 2011.
From there, Classical MPR will select 15-20 submissions to advance to the next round, where students will be matched with a professional recording engineer to produce a high-quality recording of their music. These recordings will then be judged by a celebrity panel from Minnesota’s classical music scene. The judges will select five finalists to perform at MPR’s Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul on April 17, 2011.
I hope that some of our talented local musicians will take advantage of this opportunity to highlight their talents and work with top-grade professionals. This would be a truly great experience for students hoping to take their musical abilities to the next level.
