The CMSM participating artists include Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, guest composer; Burt Hara, clarinet; Ariana Kim, violin; Young-Nam Kim, violin; Sabina Thatcher, viola; Tony Ross, cello; and Timothy Lovelace, piano.
Maestro “Skrovy” will also speak about his chamber music.
The program includes: Stanislaw Skrowaczewski String Trio (1990); Fantasie per Quattro for clarinet, violin, cello, piano; and Johaness Brahms Quintet in B minor, Op. 115 for clarinet and strings.
Young-Nam Kim, CMSM Founding Artistic Director, soloed with the Seoul Philharmonic while still in his early teens, moved to the United States while still in high school and studied primarily with Louis Krasner in Syracuse and Boston. In 2001 Mr. Kim was the artistic director with Yo-Yo Ma for the “Hun-Qiao” project to commemorate the Asian Tragedies of World War II, presented a world premiere concert of four commissioned works by eminent American, Chinese, Japanese and Korean composers and recorded Chen Yi’s new string trio “Ning” with Yo-Yo Ma and Wu Man for Sony Classics.
In April of 2004 Young-Nam Kim made a historic appearance representing the U.S. in Pyongyang, North Korea, performing four concerts in the International Spring Arts Festival. He was invited again in 2008 to appear as the soloist with the Pyongyang National Symphony.
In 22 years as the Minnesota Orchestra’s principal clarinet, Burt Hara has drawn acclaim for his solo appearances. He was previously the principal clarinet of the Alabama Symphony and also served for one year as principal clarinet of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Ariana Kim made her New York recital debut at Carnegie’s Weill Hall in March 2008 as the recipient of a prestigious Artists International Award, and is the newly appointed violin professor at the University of Indianapolis.
At the age of 11, Ariana made her debut as an orchestral soloist and has since become one of the budding young artists of her generation. An avid chamber musician of both the contemporary and traditional literature, Ariana marks her sixth season as a member of the critically-acclaimed new music ensemble, Ne(x)tworks, with whom she improvises, performs, composes, and records.
