Join the Sierra Club and Midwest Mountaineering when they host the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival On Tour at the Humphrey Center’s Cowles Auditorium on December 4, 6:00 p.m., at the University of Minnesota Humphrey Center, 301 – 19th Avenue South, Minneapolis.
Wild & Scenic On Tour brings together a selection of films from the annual festival held the third week of January in Nevada City, CA.
“We’ve all heard the ‘10 Things’ we should do to help the curb our ecological footprint,” said Tour Manager, Susie Sutphin. “Our films help people see how we can fix the system so those 10 simple steps have more collective power. It’s an empowering and motivating experience.”
The Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival was started by the watershed advocacy group, the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) in 2003.
Films featured at the tour venue in Minneapolis explore different locations across the globe that illustrate Earth’s beauty and inform the audience of what communities are doing around the world to protect the environment. Join a team of rock climbers on their adventure to Namibia in “Waypoint Africa.”
Follow the crew as they challenge the heights of mountains and gain a deeper insight of a culture different from their own. Get informed about the environmental impact of paper production in the “Secret Life of Paper.” Intense paper production practices further the destruction of forests and only increase the concerns of global warming.
Find out what individuals, industry, and the government do to decrease this environmental impact. Witness the importance of a community coming together in Africa to perform the simple act of planting trees that inspired nationwide movement to safeguard the environment, protect human rights, and defend democracy in “Planting Hope: Wangari Maathai.”
The Festival is a natural extension of the Sierra Club’s work to explore, enjoy and protect Minnesota’s environment.
“The Sierra Club is working to find solutions to global warming, protect our waters, and preserve our forests and wild lands for generations to come,” said Margaret Levin, State Director of the Sierra Club North Star Chapter. “These films will inspire viewers to act.” Midwest Mountaineering Expo Manager Bear Paulsen also said the film festival was a reflection of their values and core beliefs. “We’re excited to host a film festival that supports our mission and passion for the outdoors, while encouraging viewers to protect the outdoors.”
Co-sponsored by Midwest Mountaineering and Patagonia, festival proceeds will benefit the Sierra Club North Star Chapter.
