Asian Media Access, in collaboration with the Asian Pacific American Community Network (APAComMNet) Coalition is hosting “Connecting the Disconnected: Symposium on Strategies for Engaging the Asian American and Pacific Islander Community through Communication in Health and Human Services.”
The one-day symposium will be held Monday, December 13, 2010 at Minnesota Department of Health – Snelling Office Park, 1645 Energy Park Drive, St. Paul, MN 55108. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and the conference closes at 4:30 p.m.
The event is open to the public and intended for all AAPI stakeholders: health and human service providers, media agencies, policymakers, parents and community members.
The purpose of the Symposium is to explore AAPI communication strategies and patterns to support best practices in developing and disseminating resources targeting pan Asian groups through accessible information systems and infrastructure such as community organizing, collaboration, multimedia and the Internet. The goal is to enhance the cultural appropriateness of health and human services resources and messages targeting AAPI community members.
Symposium objectives are to analyze AAPI strategies and patterns for effective communication; build capacity within health and human services AAPI outreach; and to showcase best practices and programs engaging AAPI communities.
Presentations will include “Have You Heard About Meth?” This multilingual methamphetamine prevention package is a case study to engage the community in discussion of communication channels and message development. It will be presented by the Educate and Network between AAPIs and Community Policing with Training and Technical Assistance (ENACT) Initiative.
