NEW YORK (U.S. ASIAN WIRE – September 20, 2010) – From the writer/director of “Big Dreams Little Tokyo,” Dave Boyle delivers his second comedy White on Rice on DVD October 12, 2010 by eOne Entertainment/Indieblitz. Loaded with features not seen in the theatrical version, the DVD includes a documentary film of the Japanese Premiere, in both English and Japanese with additional subtitle options, deleted scenes, and a voice cameo by legendary actor Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, Spider-Man 3).
White on Rice was born of collaboration between Boyle and lead actor Hiroshi Watanabe (Letters from Iwo Jima).
“I worked with Hiroshi on my first film, and knew right away he had the comic charisma to carry a lead role in a comedy,” says Boyle. “He’s the only guy who could pull of this role, and I’m proud of our work together on the film.”
White on Rice is the comedic story of Jimmy (Hiroshi Watanabe, Letters from Iwo Jima, The Last Samurai), a misguided 40-year-old divorceé trying to navigate his way through a new life in America and out of his sister Aiko’s (Japanese Academy Award winner Nae) basement.
Disgraced by his disgruntled brother-in-law Tak (Mio Takada, Late Night with Conan O’Brien), the immature yet adorable Jimmy spends his nights searching for a new wife who shares his love of dinosaurs and geology.
Things go horribly wrong when Jimmy falls desperately in love with Tak’s niece, the beautiful Ramona (Lynn Chen, Saving Face), and vows to steal her away from his co-worker Tim (James Kyson Lee, Heroes). Meanwhile, Bob, Jimmy’s nephew and bunk bed-mate (newcomer Justin Kwong) harbors a secret talent that holds the key to rekindling the passion in his parents’ marriage.
