Hmong childcare workers learn computer skills

Carlos Gallego, Community Outreach Manager, said RCC Outreach works with the Eritrean, Ethiopian, Hmong, Latino, and Somali communities to support and train child care providers and guide parents to quality childcare. The training at the computer lab run by the Minnesota Multicultural Media Consortium took place at the Asian American Press building on Wednesday.
Choua Her, Hmong Outreach Coordinator, conducted the class on Microsoft Office applications. She said most of the childcare workers have keyboarding skills, but the class offers a first-language introduction to software applications that will aid them in their grant applications, reports and other related work with running a childcare center.
Part of the RCC mission is to build the knowledge and skills of early care providers and educators. The class is part of its regional and national education programs through publications and business training services.
“They have to keep their licensure up and its required to take credit hours,” said Gallego. “This counts toward their credentials.”
Resources for Child Caring is a nonprofit organization that works to raise the standard of care for children so they can grow emotionally, socially, physically and intellectually and contribute to our community.

The lab is funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce and with in-kind support from the University of Minnesota and community partners. The lab is available to the public on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. to work on projects associated with seven target areas: Computer basics, education, job search, financial literacy, health care, government and commerce.
Lab attendants will also help with special projects, such as locating employment listings web sites, and show them how to complete applications online, complete with uploading resumes, cover letters and other documentation to improve your chances with landing that interview. Other attendants are proficient with small business websites and can help the would-be entrepreneur locate the web sites and resources to put together a business plan.

The Minnesota Multicultural Media Consortium is a nonprofit organization created to be the service arm of minority publishers and broadcasters in Minnesota. MMMC is a membership organization, consisting of most of the minority newspapers, and radio stations in the state, and community business leaders as association members.
