Are you approaching retirement or recently retired and concerned about how you’ll make ends meet over the years or decades ahead? Learn how to make informed investment decisions and develop objective investment strategies to reduce financial risks and ensure income during your retirement years at a “How Can I Afford Retirement?” program series scheduled Saturdays, Sept. 25, Oct. 9 and 23, and Nov. 6, 10 a.m.-12 noon, at Hennepin County Library – Brookdale, 6125 Shingle Creek Parkway, Brooklyn Center. Admission is free.

The “Investor Education in Your Community” programs are funded by a grant from the Investor Protection Trust to the Library Foundation of Hennepin County and presented in collaboration with the Minnesota Department of Commerce, the Financial Planning Association of Minnesota, Twin Cities Public Television and the Vital Aging Network. Print materials are provided by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Objective, noncommercial information, including resources available at Hennepin County Library, will be presented by financial experts and librarians, followed by a question-and-answer panel. Community resource information tables will be available before and after the sessions.  Moderator for all sessions is Kara McGuire, Star Tribune personal finance columnist/reporter.

Dates and topics are:

• Sept. 25 – Planning for Retirement – Setting the Stage: Find out how to set retirement goals, project income and expense, allocate assets for investment and develop a personal financial/investment plan.

• Oct. 9 – Closing the Gap – Investment and Expense Strategies, Even for Late Starters! Learn how to determine and address the gap between desired and projected income, create retirement income from investments and use catch-up provisions.

• Oct. 23 – Investing Wisely to Avoid the Financial Risk of Longer Life Expectancy: Learn about assessing risk of outliving assets; diversification, asset allocation and investment types; impact of withdrawal rates on investments.

• Nov. 6 – Protecting Your Investments – The Best Defense Is a Wise and Safe Investor: Understand common retirement investment mistakes, financial fraud and abuse and basic insurance investment strategies for retirement.
