Cary, N.C. (July 26, 2010) – Coats and Bennett is adding a skilled legal and academic professional to the firm’s patent preparation and prosecution group. Letao Qin, Ph.D., J.D., holds a doctorate in Astrophysics and has worked with several of the country’s leading engineering companies and a prominent intellectual property firm. Her practice area will focus on electrical and communication technologies.

Before joining the legal profession, Qin studied under Dr. Sachiko Tsuruta at Montana State University and was involved in the Astrophysics research group. Qin received her doctoral degree after her pioneer work studying effects of strong magnet fields on neutron star thermal evolution.
She attended the extremely competitive University of Science and Technology of China, after ranking second in the Hunan province on the National College Entrance Exam.
Qin’s legal career began at a large intellectual property boutique firm in Boston. She also worked for several years as an engineer at IBM and Nortel Networks. She is currently registered to practice before the USPTO and has broad knowledge in technologies ranging from telecommunications to electrical and mechanical engineering, as well as medical devices and laser optics.

Qin earned her J.D. from Boston College Law School, cum laude, and her Ph.D. in Astrophysics from Montana State University. She is a native of China and received her B.S. in Physics from the University of Science and Technology of China.
