One of the most renowned and active viola virtuosos of our time, Nobuko Imai, will make a debut appearance with the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota on Monday, June 14, 2010, 7:30 p.m. at the Minnesota History Center, 345 Kellogg Blvd. St. Paul. Ms. Imai will introduce the U.S. premiere of a new work from Toru Takemitsu, “A String around Autumn” written for viola and piano, and especially for Imai by the eminent Japanese composer.

The program will open with the String Quintet in C major K. 515, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; and will close with String Quintet in F major Op. 88, by Johannes Brahms. Imai will perform with violinists Ariana Kim and Young-Nam Kim, violist Sally Chisholm, cellist James Jabcobson, and pianist Timothy Lovelace.

After completing her studies at the Toho School of Music in Japan, Yale University and the Juilliard School of Music, Imai won top honors at international competitions in Munich and Geneva. She is a former member of the Vermeer Quartet and is currently a member of the Michelangelo Quartet and lives in Geneva, Switzerland.

Imai and has appeared as a viola soloist with all the world’s major orchestras including Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna, Amsterdam, London, Boston and Chicago Symphonies. She has more than ten years’ teaching experience at the Academy of Music in Detmold. She currently teaches at the Conservatory in Amsterdam and is Artistic Adviser at Casals Hall in Tokyo, where she has spent many years in charge of the festival “Viola Space”.
