Innovating a fresh collaboration designed to encompass producing and presenting, Pangea World Theater and Teatro del Pueblo will produce Federico García Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba directed by Laurie Carlos and includes Suzie Cheng and Katie Ka Vang in a big cast. The play runs April 9 through 25, all shows at 7:30 p.m. at SteppingStone Theatre, 55 Victoria Street N., St. Paul.Passion erupts from the oppressive environment in The House of Bernarda Alba. Five daughters are forced into mourning by their mother. One by one they make a bid for freedom, with tragic consequences.

In The House of Bernarda Alba, Lorca addresses patriarchal constraints faced by women and anticipates Spain’s fall to a fascist regime. Within a year of completing The House of Bernarda Alba, Lorca was murdered as the Spanish Civil war escalated.

“In this particular time it is imperative that like minded organizations find new ways to partner to maximize their impact,” says Meena Natarajan, Executive and Literary Director, Pangea World Theater.

Director Laurie Carlos is a seminal American theatre artist from the New York avant-garde performance scene, who for three decades has developed new characters and aesthetics for the stage. Carlos, along with Robbie McCauley and Jessica Hagedorn formed the performance group Thought Music in the 1980s.

The cast includes Tinne Rosenmeier as Bernarda; Sarah Broude as Maria Josefa; Adlyn Carreras as Angustias; Indira Addington as Magdalena; Katie Ka Vang as Amelia; Suzie Cheng as Martirio; Laura Garcia as Adela; Mimi Holland as Servant; Paulino Brener as Poncia; and Leah Nelson in several roles.
