Washington, D.C. (February 12, 2010) – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today in recognition of Lunar New Year, which will begin on Sunday, February 14:
“The Lunar New Year is a time of celebration for Asian American and Pacific Islanders nationwide; a moment to gather with friends, family, and loved ones, reflect on the past year, and look to the future with hope and optimism. This year marks the year of the Tiger, recognized for hard work, courage, and leadership – vital characteristics as we overcome the challenges facing our nation, our economy, and our families.
“San Francisco is home to one of the largest, strongest AAPI communities in the country and some of the most festive Lunar New Year celebrations anywhere. From a Chinese New Year parade to a community street fair and a Spring festival, the City will be a center of culture, joy, and diversity. All San Franciscans will be able to rejoice not only in the pageantry of the holiday but in the beauty of a growing, thriving, dynamic AAPI population.
“As we celebrate the achievements of AAPIs and the significance of the immigrant experience for our city and our nation, we remember that the year of the Tiger is also the year of the census – and that all residents of San Francisco must be counted and must be acknowledged as critical threads in the fabric of American culture.
“I offer my warmest wishes on the year of the Tiger.”
