The Walmart Foundation State Giving Program announced February 2, 2010 that 11 Twin Cities nonprofits received a total contribution of $315,000 to help offset the increased demand for services many nonprofits are seeing due to the economic downturn.Hmong American Partnership in Saint Paul received a $25,000 grant.
“In light of the challenging economic conditions, Lifeworks is especially grateful for the generous donation we received from Walmart,” said Judy Lysne, president and chief executive officer of Lifeworks. “Walmart’s donation will help individuals with disabilities achieve unsurpassed potential as they work, learn, and live transformed lives full of the pride and purpose we all need and deserve.”
Walmart also donated to BestPrep, a nonprofit located in Brooklyn Park that teaches students business, career, and financial literacy skills through experiences that inspire success in work and life. Many Walmart employees volunteer with the organization.
“Walmart has made a significant impact on low-income and first generation college students, helping them understand what it takes to be successful in future careers,” said Bob Kaitz, president and chief executive officer of BestPrep.
“The Walmart Foundation is very pleased to be supporting nonprofits in the Twin Cities, and are committed to helping those in need in the communities where we serve,” said Lisa B. Nelson, senior manager of public affairs and government relations for Walmart. “Through this grant, we are hopeful that residents in the state of Minnesota will benefit from the numerous services offered by these nonprofits.”
The Walmart Foundation supports organizations that create opportunities so people can live better. The State Giving Program strives to award grants that have a long-lasting, positive impact on communities across the U.S.
Other Twin Cities nonprofits receiving grants included: BestPrep in Brooklyn Park; Boys & Girls Clubs; Catholic Charities; Dads Make a Difference in Saint Paul; Human Services in Washington County; Junior Achievement of the Upper Midwest in Maplewood; Lifeworks Services; North Metro Pediatrics in Coon Rapids; Special Olympics Minnesota; and Twin Cities RISE.
