Pianist Yun Ji Kim
March 1, 2010 marks the official 200th anniversary of the birth of Frédéric François Chopin, born in Warsaw, Poland on March 1, 1810, and passed away from TB on October 17, 1849. He is considered among the greatest innovative composers for piano.The music of this “quintessential poet of the piano” comes alive at Sundin Music Hall as the international performers of the Hamline International Piano Institute and members of the Hamline University Music Faculty present “30 minutes with Chopin” in a series of free concerts with dessert.
Pianist Yun Ji Kim, a new member of the Hamline International Piano Institute, will perform Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat Minor, Op. 35 for a special edition of the Chopin series at Sundin Music Hall on March 1, 2010 at 12:00 noon.
The sonata to be performed by Kim is the one that contains the well-known Funeral March.
The concern series began on Feb. 11, with an Anton Melnichenko Recital that included Beethoven’s Piano Sonata, Op. 101 and Chopin’s Sonata in B minor. It was followed on Feb. 13, with Tenor George Chu, pianist Rees Allison, and clarinetist Janet Greene in a performance of Latin American composers. On Feb. 18, Baroque Flute Virtuoso Barthold Kuijken performed with the Schubert Club.
On Feb. 20, at 8:00 p.m., The Minnesota Guitar Society will feature composer and virtuoso guitarist Andrew Zohn in concert. On Feb. 26 and 28, at 8:00 and 4:00 p.m., the Oratorio Society of Minnesota with conductor laureate George Chu will perform a 30th anniversary concert gala.
On Feb. 21, at 4:00 p.m. the Artaria String Quartet and pianist Mary Ellen Haupert, perform Brahms’ 3rd string quartet and Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E flat. Call 651-523-2459, and press 3 to leave a message for tickets.
