MINNEAPOLIS (June 24, 2013) — The Minnesota Timberwolves today announced the team’s two-game 2013 Target Center preseason schedule, highlighted by an exhibition contest against Russian champion and 2013 Turkish Airlines Euroleague semifinal CSKA Moscow on Monday, Oct. 7.
The game is part of the Euroleague American Tour 2013, in which CSKA Moscow will also play the San Antonio Spurs on Oct. 9. The Wolves will also play host to the Toronto Raptors on Saturday, Oct. 12. Both games tip off at 7 p.m.
Minnesota’s roster features former CSKA Moscow and current Russian International Team stars Andrei Kirilenko and Alexey Shved. Before signing with the Wolves, Kirilenko spent the 2011-12 season in Russia where he earned 2012 Euroleague MVP and Best Defender awards with CSKA Moscow. Shved played with CSKA Moscow from 2006 through 2012 before signing with the Timberwolves in July of 2012.
Minnesota’s matchup with CSKA Moscow will mark the second consecutive year of the Wolves playing host to an international team during the preseason. Minnesota defeated Maccabi Bazan Haifa of the Israeli Basketball Super League a year ago. The Wolves’ first contest against an international team came on Oct. 6, 2007 when they traveled to Istanbul, Turkey to play Efes Pilsen.
This will be the third trip for CSKA Moscow to the United States and Canada to play preseason games. In 2008, the Russian powerhouse played against the Orlando Magic and the Toronto Raptors. In 2010 CSKA crossed the pond again to play games against the Miami Heat, Oklahoma City Thunder and the Cleveland Cavaliers. CSKA’s victory in Cleveland made it the first European team to have ever beaten an NBA team on United States soil.
The Wolves will also travel to Montreal, Quebec on Oct. 20 to play the Boston Celtics as part of the second annual NBA Canada Series, as previously announced. The remainder of the Wolves 2013 preseason schedule will be announced in the coming months.
