MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 14, 2014) — As you might be aware of the recent developments in Turkey, I am saddened and shocked by the “custody of 31 people mostly high ranked media personnel, directors and producers of popular TV series…” and journalists.*
Among many others, two stand out as they are the heads of two prominent media outlets; Samanyolu Media Group, the largest TV based organization and the Zaman news daily, the largest circulated newspaper. Hidayet Karaca, Chairman of Samanyolu Media Group and Ekrem Dumanli, Editor in Chief of ZAMAN, have been arrested in the morning of Sunday, December 14th. The U.S. State Department’s statement reads, “It appears that media outlets that have been openly critical of the current Turkish government are among the targets of these actions by Turkish law enforcement”*.
We believe the innocence of each individual until proven guilty. Having said that, the point here we want to emphasize is the “violation of freedom of press” issue. Each individual, media group or entity should have the right to express their opinions without feeling any pressure from any political and/or non-governmental organizations. Our worry is the spread of this oppression to other media outlets in near future.
I kindly ask you to show your support by drafting your opinions, in a paragraph, against this atrocity to be published on a blog, organized by Zaman daily. The purpose of this blog is to show the prominent global community leaders’ reaction to such incident, who stand by democracy and freedom of press. Please show your support in this unity around the freedom of press, not only for this incident, but as a principle.

All the Best,
