Minnesotans’ donations to famine relief efforts in Somalia and the Horn of Africa will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000 at GiveMN.org, benefiting the work of the Minneapolis-based American Refugee Committee (ARC) in Somalia.
Minneapolis-based The Mosaic Company is providing the matching grant, as well as covering credit card transaction fees for donations, so your gift to support lifesaving relief in Somalia will be fully maximized. Mosaic provided an additional $100,000 grant to ARC.
Minnesota is home to the largest U.S. Somali community, and the matching grant allows residents’ donation dollars to go farther to help the people in need in Africa.
“By making this generous gift, Minnesotans can join Mosaic in the fight against famine in Somalia, stand with our local Somali community and demonstrate the spirit and generosity of Minnesota,” said Daniel Wordsworth, president of the American Refugee Committee. “This donation will help the people of Somalia for whom each day is a struggle to survive.”
Donors can simply visit www.GiveMN.org and click on the homepage link to make a donation to the American Refugee Committee Somalia famine relief efforts to have their donations matched. GiveMN provides donors with a free account to track, organize and retrieve donation information and tax receipts at any time.
“GiveMN.org provides Minnesotans an easy, secure and fast way to support the Somalia relief efforts,” said Dana Nelson, executive director, GiveMN.org. “Mosaic’s generosity with a matching donation and coverage of credit card transactions makes GiveMN a valuable channel for Minnesota’s donations to help those in need.”
“I hope that Mosaic’s dollar-for-dollar match will encourage others to donate and stand with the people of East Africa in their hour of need,” said Chris Lambe, director of social responsibility for Mosaic. “We each have to do what we can to alleviate the suffering of the Somalis, Kenyans and Ethiopians affected by famine.”
American Refugee Committee programs are built from the ground up. We work with people at the most vulnerable points in their lives, when they have lost everything to war or disaster. They let us know what they need most, and we work together to develop ways to help them get it.
Our programs are as diverse as the people we serve, but they all work together for the same goal: to help people take back control of their lives. We have worked with refugees around the world for more than 30 years, and we help nearly 2.5 million people a year. Through our Neighbors Initiative, we are partnering with the Somali diaspora community to build community in Somalia and in the US. We also have a team on the ground in Somalia who are providing life-saving assistance to people who fled their homes due to the famine crisis. We are based in Minneapolis, MN.
