Washington, DC (March 23, 2011) – On the one-year anniversary of the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), the Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC) and its community partner organizations announce the launch of the Ensuring Our Healthy Future Campaign. The campaign strives to ensure that Southeast Asian Americans are knowledgeable about health benefits under the ACA and have the opportunity to inform its implementation at state and local levels.
The Ensuring Our Healthy Future Campaign engages local partners who have expertise in serving Southeast Asian American communities in five states: California, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania. SEARAC’s executive director, Doua Thor, stated: “Implementation of the Affordable Care Act presents an opportunity for local communities to engage stakeholders in creating policies and programs that will best serve those who are most in need of accessible and affordable care. We will be active participants throughout the implementation process to make certain that all communities have access to quality health care.”
The campaign launch today includes a nation-wide webinar on understanding the ACA and its impact on Southeast Asian Americans.
Ger Vang, executive director of Lao Family Community of Stockton, said, “Many people in our community know that this landmark health care legislation passed, but some, especially our elders, are still wondering how the law benefits them. This campaign will help community members better understand how the Affordable Care Act affects them.”
The campaign will also highlight ongoing health care access issues in local communities. Executive director of Khmer Girls in Action, Suely Ngouy, stated: “Through the campaign, we will continue to highlight the voices of youth who carry the burden and responsibility in their families when systems don’t work. As a youth organizing social justice organization, we want policymakers to know that young people in our community are their parents’ health care navigators – and the current systems are not only failing those seeking health services, but whole families and communities.”
The campaign launches today and runs through December 2011. To find out more information about the campaign visit: http://www.searac.org/content/ensuring-our-healthy-future-campaign.
