Oakland, Calif. (June 6, 2014) — Asian Pacific Partners for Empowerment, Advocacy, and Leadership (APPEAL) is honored to announce that it has received support from Legacy to build leadership in communities of color and LGBT populations.
In addition, the support will help develop measurements that can assist health departments, professional associations, mainstream organizations, and foundations in being able to increase positive health outcomes for these communities.
This support will enable the efforts of APPEAL and the Phoenix Health Equity Group, a multi-ethnic, multi-racial, and LGBT group of leaders, to build alliances with federal, state, and local health departments, research institutions, community-based organizations, and other tobacco control institutions. Those key groups will work together to focus on the needs and strengths of communities disproportionately affected by tobacco related health disparities.
By providing a set of measurements agreed upon by those in the field, the network supported by Legacy will help monitor progress to date and assist stakeholders to institutionalize measures that can help agencies measure which promising practices are working and how funds and resources are allocated effectively to reduce the burden of tobacco in underserved (or under-resourced) communities.
Asian Pacific Partners for Empowerment, Advocacy, and Leadership (APPEAL) is a national organization working towards social justice and a tobacco-free Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) community. Founded in 1994, APPEAL was originally a program of Asian Health Services, a local community health center in Oakland, California. It has since established itself an important national network providing key technical assistance and resources on health justice.
Our Mission: To champion social justice and achieve parity and empowerment for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders by supporting and mobilizing community-led movements through advocacy and leadership development on critical public health issues. Our Vision: Towards health parity and justice.
