MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 9, 2013) — On November 12, faith, immigrant rights and labor leaders announced the launch of “Fast for Families: A Call for Immigration Reform and Citizenship,” taking place on the National Mall, steps away from the Capitol.
Leaders and immigrant members of the community will fast every day and night, abstaining from all food — except water —to move the hearts and compassion of members of Congress to pass immigration reform with a path to citizenship.
Emilia Gonzalez Avalos is a local immigration activist, and Director of Advocacy and Community Engagement of NAVIGATE, a non-profit organization that was created to address the growing need for resources that help immigrant students, regardless of immigration status, in Minnesota to pursue higher education. Emilia joined the effort in D.C. as solidarity faster on December 8th.
“I witnessed, as thousands of people across the nation, the courage in which Eliseo Medina fasted for 22 days. As a child of immigration narratives, I feel a moral duty to join the national effort as we seek immigration relief for our undocumented brothers and sisters. We are joining the effort because we know we will succeed. We know the American people are on our side. Right now, the House of Representatives has a chance to make a difference in the lives of millions of hard working people, by allowing a vote on immigration reform. This vote would benefit the state of Minnesota and the nation for generations to come”
National leaders have visited the tent, from President Barak Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President John Biden, Rep. James McGovern, Senator Patrick Leahy, Rep. Keith Ellison, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Dolores Huerta, and many others.
Thousands of immigration activist across the nation organize actions in their communities as the House of Representatives session comes to an end on December 13th.
Emilia will be back in the Twin Cities on December 12th, 2013 and will participate in the celebrations of Our Lady of Guadalupe joining Kalpulli Ketzalcoatlicue (aztec dance group) in Ascension Church on 1723 Bryant Avenue North in Minneapolis. Emilia has not announced the date in which she will end her fast.
