“It’s not the world that revolves around you, my son, it’s the flies.”
In July 2014, Goldfish Press (Seattle, WA) published Kevin Minh Allen’s long-awaited first collection of poetry, “My Proud Sacrifice.” This book represents the culmination of his 20 years of writing poetry, spanning geography and time, life and death, stasis and metamorphosis.
Kevin Minh’s poetry plumbs the depths of his identity as an A.V.O.I.D.: “Adopted Vietnamese Of Indeterminate Descent.” This identity encompasses his lived experienced as a mixed race Vietnamese who was born near Sài Gòn, orphaned when he was seven months old, and then eventually adopted by White parents in Rochester, New York in November 1974.
Given that Kevin Minh knew very little about his beginnings, let alone his own kin, he set about imagining and re-creating a personal history that reflected an inner truth that helped him peel away the little white lies which had been obscuring his view into his own existence. Thus, “My Proud Sacrifice” is composed of many tales that tell a story not often told.
Kevin Minh Allen has written poetry, essays, news articles, book reviews and blog posts since 1998. His work has appeared in both print and online magazines, newspapers, journals, anthologies and blogs, such as The International Examiner, Northwest Asian Weekly, Tieng Magazine, fighting 44s, Asian American revolutionary Movement Ezine, Journal of Southeast Asian American Education & Advancement, Altar Magazine, The Humanist, chrysanthemum, and Eye To The Telescope, to name but a few.
For 14 years, Kevin Minh has been living in Seattle, Washington, where he has loved and lost, and been loved and lost, and everything in between. He makes his living working at a local independent review board where he immerses himself in the growing field of bioethics.
Kevin Minh Allen is currently doing research for a political biography he plans to write about President Nguyen Van Thieu, who was the leader of the former Republic of Vietnam from 1967 to 1975.
