Alex Phung running for School Board

Alex Phung  is seeking election to the Minneapolis School Board seat representing District 6 in Southwest Minneapolis, as well as the DFL endorsement.

Phung is the oldest son of Vietnamese immigrants who were grateful for the opportunity to pursue the American Dream. Having learned the importance of education from his parents and guided by a quality public school system, he graduated from Hopkins High School, the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago Law School.

Phung is currently a lawyer at Cargill, where he partners with business colleagues to address a wide variety of issues and challenges facing the company. His professional career includes two of Minnesota’s largest and most prestigious firms, with a broad transactional law practice at Dorsey & Whitney where he advised clients on issues as varied as mergers and acquisitions and campaign finance and election law.

In 2008, Phung married Amy, his high school sweetheart and currently an elementary school teacher in the Hopkins School District. She previously taught in the Chicago Public Schools while Phung completed his law degree.

The two now live in Southwest Minneapolis with their dog, Berkeley, who accompanies them on walks to the Chain of Lakes, area restaurants or simply down to the grocery store.

Over the years, Phung has endeavored to give back to the community in order to pay forward the resources, support and opportunities provided to him and his family. He has sought to improve the quality of life in Minneapolis through volunteer work.

He currently serves on the board of directors of Rebuilding Together – Twin Cities. More recently, he has served on the Capital Long-Range Improvement Committee and the Minneapolis Arts Commission.
