Savannakhet, Laos (Jan. 26, 2011) – U.S. Ambassador to Laos Karen B. Stewart visited Savannakhet on January 26, 2011, where she officially opened the American Bookshelf at the Savannakhet Library.
The United States Embassy presented a selection of books, comprising over 400 titles in both English and Lao, to the Savannakhet Library on January 26. This important collection is designed to help the people of Savannakhet, especially students, access information about the United States, including its culture, history and society, literature and performing arts, economic and trade. This collection also contains information on issues of global concern, such as protection of the environment, law, science and technology.
The U.S. Embassy supports five locations in Laos with large book donations and materials: The American Center, located on the campus of the Lao-American College; the Lao-American Reading Center, located inside the Luang Prabang Library; an American Bookshelf in the Pakse Library; and an American Bookshelf in the Faculty of Engineering, National University of Laos.
