LOS ANGELES (Jan. 27, 2014) — To mark Auschwitz Liberation Day, Jewishjournal.com published an online Korean-language version of its investigative story into the concentration camps in North Korea.
The long piece is the first expose into the ongoing horror of North Korean concentration camps in the American Jewish press. Reporter Jared Sichel flew to Washington, D.C. to interview Shin Dong-hyuk, perhaps the only prisoner of one of the North Korean regime’s camps to escape alive. Sichel met Shin Dong-hyuk at the United States Holocaust Museum and Memorial.
In an accompanying editorial, Jewish Journal Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Rob Eshman called the North Korean concentration camp system a modern genocide and called on the Jewish community, and the international community, to take action.
“Tens of thousands, or, by some estimates, as many as 200,000 men, women and children today live and die inside North Korean prison camps,” wrote Eshman. “Some from birth. They are subject to torture, rape and inevitable death.”
“Is it a stretch to compare what the North Korean regime is doing to its own people to what the Nazis did to the Jews? I don’t think so.”
“In Auschwitz and the other camps, one could argue, the ultimate purpose was annihilation, not imprisonment. But, as an eyewitness to the horror told our reporter, there is good reason to believe the North Korean regime fully intends to ultimately exterminate its prisoners.”
Eshman said JewishJournal.com prepared the translations so that Korean speakers around the world would see the prison camps through the eyes of a people who suffered a similar fate.
“We want them to know we see this as a similar crime against humanity,” Eshman said.
