Superior, Wis. (Jan. 28, 2014) — The University of Wisconsin-Superior Black Squad won First Place at the Hatting St. Thomas School of Law Mock Trial Invitational the weekend of January 24-26, 2014.
The tournament was held at St. Thomas Law School in downtown Minneapolis. The team earned a 7 win-1 loss record to take the tournament. Black Squad includes Emmanuel Tucker II, Taylor Tengwall, Andy Hanson, Cody Chaffee, Allison Marble, Yer Vang, and Cassy Foltz Burr.
Gold Squad had a tough weekend with near misses (0-8 record) but steadily improved their performance as the tournament proceeded. Gold Squad includes Brandon Engblom, Matt Munkelwitz, Nicole Stodoba, Jessica Schubring, Jessa McLeod, Megan Guptill, Randy Bender and Turner Tomczyk.
Andy Hanson and Allison Marble won Outstanding Witness awards. Cassandra Foltz Burr and Megan Guptill won Outstanding Attorney awards. Foltz-Burr was the best attorney of the tournament.
The team is coached by Dr. Maria Stalzer Wyant Cuzzo, Mark Fruehauf, Mary Russell and Julie Benfield. Fruehauf, Russell and Benfield are practicing attorneys in the region.
The team competes this coming weekend at the national level Loras College tournament in Dubuque, IA. Over 50 university Mock Trial teams will compete. They are preparing for the Regionals tournament set for the second weekend of February 2014. Regionals will qualify them for national level competition.
