Fifteen students from New Millennium Academy, a K-8 Hmong Public Charter School in North Minneapolis since 2004, will travel to Washington, D.C. from June 19-23, 2011, to take part in the Close Up Washington program.
Close Up is the nation’s leading nonprofit, nonpartisan civic education organization. The weeklong program gives students the opportunity to experience government in action and gain the valuable skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to become lifelong informed and engaged citizens.
Since 1971, Close Up has brought over 700,000 students and teachers from across the country to Washington, D.C. to experience firsthand the history, politics, and culture of the nation’s capital. While on the program, students will participate in small group workshops and seminars with Washington, D.C. insiders and experts.
Furthermore, students will learn from and discuss current issues with peers from across the country, exposing the students to differing attitudes and perspectives.
The all-inclusive program cost for each student, including instruction, travel, expenses, meals, and lodging is $1,514. Because civic education is for everyone, and not just the most privileged, New Millennium is dedicated to making this valuable educational program available to our students regardless of financial background. www.NewMillenniumAcademy.Org
