ST. PAUL — Hmong College Prep Academy (formerly Hmong Academy), a St. Paul-based charter school that provides Twin City students with a rigorous college prep curriculum, recently announced that it has met Minnesota Department of Education’s Adequate Yearly Progress goals for the fourth consecutive year.
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is a means of measuring, through standards and assessments, the achievement of No Child Left Behind’s (NCLB) goal. The goal of NCLB is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and state academic assessments.
“Making AYP for four consecutive years is a testament to the dedication of HCPA students and their families, teachers and staff,” stated Superintendent Dr. Christianna Hang. “Our school has academically come a long way in its 8 year history. I couldn’t be more proud of this achievement.”
Dr. Christianna Hang credits her school’s TAP program (System for Teacher and Student Advancement) as a key contributor to her school’s academic success. “TAP is a results-oriented program that ensures teachers are held accountable for their students’ progress and results. The program also uses data which helps to drive student learning.” Dr. Hang added, “Our TAP goals were instrumental in our students witnessing a 25% increase in reading rates.”
She also feels that an increased access to technology has also contributed to making AYP. “Our school is at a 1:1 student to computer ratio which has provided for access to a number of great learning opportunities, including on-going support for MAP (Measurement of Academic Progress) tests. Dr. Hang continued, “We’ve invested over $600,000 in new computers & technological infrastructure and our campus now is 100% wireless.”
Dr. Christianna Hang added that additional programs such as tutoring, after school homework help and a low student to teacher ratio each “played a major role in achieving AYP.”
Hmong College Prep Academy is located at 1515 Brewster Street in St. Paul, just southeast of the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.
