ST. PAUL — The Center for Hmong Arts and Talents and Saint Paul Public Library are celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with a special performance of the Fresh Traditions Fashion Show on Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m., at the Rice Street Library, 1011 Rice St, St Paul, MN 55117.
The event is free and open to the public. It part of Saint Paul Public Library’s Asian America program and celebrates Asian Pacific American Heritage in May.
Among the seven free cultural events planned throughout the month, Fresh Traditions will feature a discussion on traditional Hmong fashion and textiles followed by a brief fashion show highlighting pieces from past events.
Library Specialist and Adult Programs Committee member, Mary Ann Berglund, reached out to CHAT specifically seeking assistance in planning a program around Hmong fashion.
“CHAT has a solid reputation as a supporter of the arts and when I first heard of Fresh Traditions, I knew that I wanted to investigate a collaboration,” said Berglund.
Fresh Traditions Fashion Show, a program of CHAT, is a culturally inspired fashion event which exhibits the creativity, originality and quality of work by Hmong fashion designers.
Fresh Traditions is the premiere platform for emerging Hmong designers in the United Sates. Selected designers are challenged with incorporating five traditional Hmong fabrics in a contemporary form, all the while creating a cohesive collection.
“Incorporating elements of traditional Hmong designs, colors and textures into new creations sounds fun and exciting!” said Berglund. “As a person who sews, loves fabric and needlework, I thought this program would appeal to many and present a new look at fashion.”

The Center for Hmong Arts & Talent (CHAT) grew out of Pom Siab Hmoob Theatre (PSHT), the first Hmong theatre company in the world. PSHT changed its name to CHAT and expanded its reach into multiple disciplines – making it the first Hmong arts organization in the United States.
