ST PAUL, Minn. (Dec. 4, 2014) — Saint Paul Public Schools are dedicated to providing an equitable learning environment for all students. It is in that spirit that Saint Paul Public Schools supports the Minnesota State High School League’s policy proposal regarding the athletic participation of transgender student athletes.
This policy aligns closely to the equity work that we are engaged with in Saint Paul. We believe that it is our moral responsibility to welcome our students’ whole selves into our schools. No child should be required to check a part of themselves at the door in order to gain access to school programming, including participation in student athletics.
We urge you to not succumb to misinformation, myths and fear mongering that have been spread by some in order to derail this important decision. For example, this policy does not mandate how districts use facilities; districts have been managing this for years with mixed gender wrestling teams and football squads. This policy also does not have any implications on scholarship opportunities as the NCAA has their own policies that address equitable access for their adult trans athletes. We ask that you continue your debate grounded in facts, equity and the children we are privileged to serve.
Saint Paul Public Schools commends the Minnesota State High School League for leading this important conversation. We ask that you continue showing the courageous leadership that brought us here today and vote to pass this policy.
