WASHINGTON, D.C. – OCA – Asian American Pacific Advocates is now accepting applications for its Fall 2015 Internship Program.
“The OCA Internship Program gives students a 10 week, direct advocacy experience, that includes interaction with elected officials and policy makers, as well as the development of professional skills upon which to build their careers,” said Michael W. Kwan, OCA National President. “As one of the only paid social justice internship programs, hundreds of students have benefited from participating in one of the largest and longest running internship programs for Asian American and Pacific Islander students. This program provides a necessary bridge between a student’s undergraduate studies and the real world experience that is highly sought after by employers.”
Successful applicants are placed in federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, Congressional offices, and corporations in the Washington, D.C. metro area. Intern placements are tailored to an individual’s background, career interests, and experience. OCA’s intern alumni have gone on to succeed in diverse environments ranging from Fortune 500 corporations, government agencies, and social justice and civil rights organizations.
“My OCA internship provided me with much needed experience to understand how my activism on my college campus translated to the national stage, and it led me to focus on my passion of advocating for the Asian American community,” recalled Vicki Shu, OCA’s Vice President of Public Affairs, OCA Intern Alumnus, and former President of OCA-New York. “Despite being the sole intern for OCA, I had the privilege of meeting hundreds of like-minded individuals and I developed close personal and professional relationships that I maintain to this day. I can only imagine the networking opportunities for OCA interns now that the number has increased to over 30 interns annually!”
Candidates should be recent graduates or undergraduates from two-year or four-year institutions and must be able to work between 34-40 hours per week. The Fall Internship program will begin on September 28, 2015 and run through December 4, 2015. Interns must be present for the duration of the ten-week program and will be provided with a living stipend.
