MINNEAPOLIS (Jan. 25, 2014) — Graduate Women in Science (GWIS), a national network of industrial and academic scientists, now has a newly named Minnesota chapter. A name change to Xi Chapter of GWIS was effective on Jan. 1, 2014.
Xi, the scientific term for neutrally charged subatomic hadron particles, is the newly assumed name of the previous group under Sigma Delta Epsilon. Xi chapter serves the greater Twin Cities area as a resource for women with baccalaureate and doctoral degrees for social and professional networking. The group holds monthly meetings from September through May, with dinner and featured speaker events.
The mission of GWIS is to further interest in science, to provide a society for the recognition of women in science, and to bring them together in fraternal relationship. The Xi chapter is established, in Minnesota, in connection with local Universities and businesses where women are engaged in R&D (research and development) work or scientific training. Xi chapter awards scholarships to graduate students for travel to scientific meetings annually. Chapters also conduct fundraising and outreach events in the community, in part to encourage women and girls to pursue careers in science.
Xi Chapter GWIS has a diverse membership that reflects the race and ethnicities of scientists working at the University of Minnesota and other institutions around the state and region. It is also hosting the National meeting of the GWIS Corporation at the University of Minnesota on June 15 through 17th this year.
