GERMANTOWN, MD (Aug. 1, 2012) — Cases of corporate corruption, with government officials receiving handsome payoffs, crop up like weeds in America’s history. In the 19th century, there had been fixing of gold prices scandals in the Ulysses Grant administration, topped by the Credit Mobilier.
Warren Harding was a classic Republican president — tax cuts, help for big business, America-first foreign policy set-up of stiff tariffs under the guise of protecting American industry which was to support their political contributors’ business interests. Republicans want to roll the clock back to a time when America and its economy was controlled by Republicans and big business at the expense of the average American taxpayer.
In the 1920s nowhere was the prosperity more conspicuous than on Wall Street, home of the NY Stock Exchange. Paper wealth being acquired masked a rot in the American economy. The wealth of the world was concentrated in the hands of a small class at the top. The wealth trickling down from the top was not enough.
The great bulk of the population simply couldn’t create the demand needed to keep up with increasing supply. The American consumer could not use up all the goods that American manufacturers were producing. Is it fair to use other people’s money to make profits but throw the problem on the lap of American taxpayers when things go wrong?
After the 1929 crash, the economy was paralyzed. In one year, 1300 banks failed. There was no FDIC. Hard-earned savings disappeared as 5,000 banks closed during the next three years. Without banks to extend credit and capital, businesses and factories closed, forcing more workers into unemployment lines. Treasury secretary Andrew Mellon whose tax policies had contributed to underlying flaws in the American economy proposed to “liquidate labor, stocks, the farmer, real estate” so people will work harder. Hoover eased him out by making him ambassador to England.
The problem with the latest economic implosion is that none of the criminals were brought to justice and still collected their fat bonuses. The same rogues are adamantly opposed to regulations.
How long will Congress tolerate, outside of party lines, their rogue members, e.g. Darryll Issa, Congress’ biggest clown, who went after Attorney General Eric Holder to embarrass Pres. Obama? Why did he act now or resurrect the issue of “fast and furious” during an election year?
They did not ask any of the Bush appointees at DOJ, e.g., AG Michael Mulkasey, ATF director Ken Melman and US Attorney Denis Burke in Ariz. to testify on the program, which began under Pres. George W. Bush. Melman and Burke resigned. They want and are salivating for a confrontation, using the death of a Border Patrol agent and jeopardizing the identity of confidential informants to get what they want. For the abuse of his Congressional power, Congress should consider impeaching this partisan hater of Pres. Obama (Ayatollah Issa). Holder did not succumb to the intimidation of this bully who also wants him to back off from the GOP Voter ID brouhaha to deny certain groups their voting rights to steal the election in November!
Florida Republicans, led by Gov. Rick Scott, are removing thousands of people from state voter rolls. More than 2600, the vast majority Latinos, Democrats and Independents, have received letters challenging their citizenship and requiring them to prove their eligibility to vote in a state court.
Rep. Darryl Issa (R-CA), admitted June 24 that he has no proof on the Fast & Furious, contradicting the cry-baby from Ohio (John Boehner) about a cover-up that he accused the White House of. For the GOP majority in the subcommittee to recommend that the Attorney General be held in contempt because “they have the power and lust” to do so would be a disservice to truth and justice in this country, something the American people are aware of some time ago. His admission is another slap in the face that this headline-seeking publicity hound never met an accusation too loopy to hurl. It was just a cheap political opportunism.
This right-wing crowd is truly disturbed. Dept. of Justice has released over 7600 documents detailing the Fast & Furious Program over the course of the House Committee’s lengthy investigation. These documents described a controversial practice carried out by agents of the ATF that are designed to “walk” into Mexico in hopes of tracing them back to the high-level gun traffickers. The program was ended by Holder. Frankly they are after Pres. Obama, spreading lies that he is going to take away their 2nd amendment rights.
The modus operandi of GOP lawmakers, e.g., Issa, Sessions, Grassley, et al. gives Americans a glimpse of how the Taliban would rule if they succeed in Afghanistan. These clowns have made the U.S. the banter of jokes abroad and are turned off by their criminal sanctimonious lies at home to humiliate the first black president, since the first day of his inauguration, under the false premise of wanting to take our country back. They are the face and voice of a shrinking base that thinks white is always right, white is better than any other racial group.
When Republicans resort to personal attacks, e.g. Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-SC calling Nancy Pelosi “mind-numbingly stupid” for suggesting that Republicans are attacking Eric Holder in order to advance an agenda on voter suppression, then you know you have uncovered their conspiracy to elicit such highly-emotional denial. An Illinois state senator (Mike Turzai) was candid enough (unlike MWR) to admit that it was used to elect Mitt Romney.
Thank God we don’t live in the states where these enemies of democracy live. The world has changed in the past 30 years. With the Internet, more people are better informed than some of these criminal politicians and have easier access to information and daily news, and have better tools to stay current
Critics of Pres. Obama are salivating for the disappointing news from Labor for the month of May. From their reaction, they rejoice at it beyond proportion as the coming of the economic Armageddon to embarrass the president. How they hope that it will stay there at least till November.
The economy is not growing as fast as Americans want it to grow, as is true of the global economy overall, but we are not blind along the way to the destruction of Republican lawmakers, both in the House and Senate. It’s amazing that the economy has managed to eke out some growth amidst all the GOP obstructions. Their own idea of job creation is to cut, cut, cut, while making sure that subsidies continue to benefit big corporations which do not need them and make the tax cuts permanent. They despise Europeans for their Socialist programs but cannot wait to get this country to be in the same Euro Zone and back to the same failed policies of the Bush administration. Frankly, we need more public sector jobs until we can get a breather from this malaise.
It is a fact that both the Obama and Romney campaigns have been guilty of a “choose and pick” syndrome, while they maximize each other’s weakness. Romney has shown a propensity to do this to an opponent, and will say and do anything to get what he wants, strictly from a business perspective.
In the end, this election will revolve around two things: likeability, which involves connecting with others, and income tax returns which tell American voters whom they are voting for. They are not going to elect someone whom they do not know even if they are promised that they will learn about him after the election.
The income tax return is a standard measurement of a presidential candidate’s character, honesty, candor and transparency. He has shown us in London that he is just another GW Bush, a bumbling idiot (author of No Apology) on the world stage. He has foot-in-the-mouth disease. The idiot spent the whole day July 26 apologizing for his gaffes.
