Letter from the President & CEO:
Celebrating The Political Leadership Pipeline this APA Heritage Month
APAICS Newsletter (May 31, 2011) – Friends, as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month draws to a close, we celebrate the rich diversity of the 18.5 million Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) in the U.S. APAICS is proud to celebrate another round of APAICS leadership programs to ensure a powerful political voice for our community.
Our APAICS leadership programs ensure a continuous pipeline of leaders and elected officials who are invested in our community. This month, we provided a rising AAPI elected official, Cambridge, MA Councilor Leland Cheung the opportunity to shadow U.S. Rep. Judy Chu under our Congressional Mentorship Program. We also bid farewell to our 2010-11 Fellows as they end their congressional fellowships and decide on the important next steps in their careers. Next week, we welcome the next class of undergraduate summer interns who will be placed in congressional offices, federal agencies, and AAPI nonprofits, providing the opportunity of a lifetime to learn about raising the voices of our community in the nation’s capital.
For those of you who were not able to attend our APA Heritage Month events, you may view on our website the videos for our 1st Annual Leadership Symposium on May 3, our 17th Annual Gala Awards Dinner on May 4, and soon the APA Entertainment Night that we hosted along with Comcast and Mnet in honor of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Staff Association on May 24.
We also congratulate Rep. Judy Chu, chair of CAPAC, for her successful Annual AAPI Summit on May 24-25. Over 200 community leaders gathered at the CAPAC Summit with 15 Members of Congress to hear experts discuss the state of AAPIs in education, healthcare, economic development, housing, immigration, and civil rights.
APAICS looks forward to strengthening our collaborations with CAPAC to raise our community to even greater heights.
