WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 17, 2015) — OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates applauds the launch of President Obama’s ConnectHome program.
The ConnectHome pilot program will launch in twenty-seven cities and one tribal nation and, initially, will reach over 275,000 low-income households –nearly 200,000 children – with the support they need to access the Internet at home. Internet Service Providers, non-profits and the private sector will offer free or reduced broadband access, technical training, digital literacy programs, and devices for residents in assisted housing units.
“We applaud the President for his bold action and dedication to increasing broadband access for low-income communities. As our country further moves online, increased access to fast and affordable broadband is more necessary than ever before,” said Michael W. Kwan, OCA National President. “The ConnectHome program will help make broadband more accessible for all Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Americans.”
“Although aggregated Asian American data shows high broadband adoption rates, it hides segments of the Asian Pacific American communities, such as Southeast Asian and Pacific Islanders, that have some of the highest poverty and lowest educational attainment rates within our country. Those segments suffer from broadband adoption and access disparities similar to those found in education, healthcare, and employment,” continued Kwan. “This inexact data should not be used to exclude a family from the opportunities to improve their lives that affordable broadband access can provide.”
“This program is just one step toward promoting equitable access for all low-income families. OCA will continue to press the Federal Communications Commission to modernize the Lifeline program to increase the amount of low-income households that can access broadband,” concluded Kwan.
OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates is a national organization of community advocates dedicated to improving the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs).
