MINNEAPOLIS (Oct. 27, 2014) — The Organizing Apprenticeship Project (OAP) is pleased to announce the hiring of Vina Kay as the organization’s new executive director, effective as of today’s date.
“I am honored to be selected as the next executive director of OAP. I look forward to our continued partnerships with communities of color and American Indian communities to advance racial justice in Minnesota,” stated Ms. Kay. OAP’s current initiatives include piloting an education equity rubric in several school districts statewide, working with the Minnesota Department of Health to expand community engagement and health equity, and co-creating with communities throughout the state regional racial justice narratives and agendas. OAP continues to train apprentices in racial equity organizing with over 200 apprentices trained to date.
“Vina has the relationships and skills we need to further the racial equity movement in Minnesota,” said OAP Board Chair Elaine Salinas. “We’re excited to have her lead the organization.”
Ms. Kay recently served as the interim executive director and the director of research and policy at OAP. She replaces OAP founding director Beth Newkirk, who is retiring after starting the organization 21 years ago. Ms. Kay has her Juris Doctorate from the University of Minnesota Law School and bachelor’s degree from Carleton College.
In addition to the announcement of the new executive director, OAP will be unveiling a new organization name at their celebration for racial justice on Tuesday, Oct. 28th from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Parkway Theatre, 4814 Chicago Ave South, Minneapolis, MN 55417. The event is a community-wide celebration of OAP’s 21 years of advancing racial equity across the state of Minnesota.
