ST. PAUL (Oct. 24, 2012) — Saint Paul Police Officer Daniel King continues to recover today from a gunshot wound he suffered late Tuesday night.
His wounds came at the hands of a Saint Paul man suspected of taking a shotgun and a compound bow with arrows from a residence earlier in the night.
Just before 11:00 p.m. Tuesday, officers received a report of a theft from a residence in the 1100 block of Flandrau Street. As officers looked into that incident, two other officers noticed a man in the nearby area of the intersection of Payne and Minnehaha Avenues carrying what appeared to be a long gun.
Those officers, King, a veteran of almost 11 years with the department, and Brian Wanschura, a 4-year veteran of the department, drove their marked squad into a parking lot in the rear of a building at 720 Payne Avenue where the man was.
The suspect, later identified as Chue Xiong, 22 of Saint Paul, raised a shotgun as officers arrived and gunfire was exchanged. At least one round from the shotgun struck the squad car and hit Officer King. The officers fearing for their lives fatally wounded Xiong.
This shooting incident is believed to be an isolated event. Officer King continues to recover from his wounds at Regions Hospital.
