MINNEAPOLIS (Aug. 25, 2015) — Sylvia, a play by A.R. Gurney and directed by Metropolitan State University theater student Charlie Coleman, premieres Sept. 10, 11 and 12 at 7 p.m.; and a matinee performance will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 12, 2015.
Performances will be at the Stagedoor Theater, located in the Whitney Fine Arts Center on the Minneapolis Campus of Metropolitan State University and Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC), at 1424 Yale Place, Minneapolis. Parking is found on-street and the MCTC ramp at 1501 Hennepin Avenue.
Sylvia is the story of a dog and the couple who adopts her. Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after 22 years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg’s career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate’s career as a public-school English teacher is beginning to offer her more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park—or that has found him—bearing only the name “Sylvia” on her nametag. A street-smart mix of labrador and poodle, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy until, after a series of hilarious and touching complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise and Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives.
