Memorial Day Remembrance

Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation with The Reverend Dr. Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., Chaplain Craig Tennison, Minister of Music will officiate a non-denominational Christian worship services the weekend of May 28 and 29, 2011 at the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel next to the old fort at the intersections of highways 5, 55, and 62 – just follow the historic site signs.

Beginning at dusk on Saturday, May 28, approximately 8:30 p.m., through dawn on Sunday, May 29, approximately 6:30 a.m., a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held. The public is welcome to stop by and light a candle and place at the foot of a white cross in the Memorial Garden, then enter the Chapel sanctuary for prayer. Overnight security will be provided on the Chapel grounds.

The service is to remember Memorial Day with a special “Memorial Garden” to the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism will be held on Sunday, May 29, starting at 11:00 a.m. White crosses bearing the names of the war dead from MN, IA, WI, ND and SD will be established on a field of grass.

Family members of these casualties will be recognized during the worship service. Worshippers will be invited to silently visit the garden and place poppies at each of the over two hundred crosses. An Honor Guard of the American Veterans Post # 1 of Mendota will be posted at the entrance to the garden.

The Fort Snelling Memorial Rifle Squad will fire the vollies and play Taps as the congregation gathers to lower the US flag to half-staff. U. S. Army Chaplain, Col. Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “A Believer’s Look at War.” The 11:00 a.m. worship service is open to the public.
