ST. PAUL (Aug. 6, 2013) – At their endorsing meeting on Sunday, the St. Paul 4th Congressional District Green Party endorsed Johnny Howard in St. Paul’s Ward One City Council election.
Howard, 58, filed his candidacy on Monday with the Green Party endorsement. The long-time Ward One activist founded and directed the Thomas-Dale Block Clubs. He is a 19-year volunteer director of the Frogtown Football Program, run from West Minnehaha Rec Center.
“We’re thrilled to endorse Johnny Howard for Ward One City Council” said Vanessa Vogl, St. Paul/4th CD Green Party Co-chair. “He will fight for economic justice, responsive government and a safe, healthy environment. Through 29 years in St. Paul, Johnny built deep relationships and tangible, positive outcomes in the neighborhood. His record shows that he will listen, work hard and put people first as Ward One’s next councilmember.”
As a 29-year Ward One resident, Howard previously served as legislative aide to Ward One Councilman Bill Wilson, and is a retired United Auto Worker member with 30 years of work experience at Ford Motor.
As director of the Thomas Dale Block Clubs, Howard organized hundreds of neighbors in a confederation of block clubs. He worked with police to reduce street crime and drug dealing during the height of the 1990s crack epidemic. His accomplishments include helping to close a prostitution-front “health spa,” participating in the formation of John School for sex offenders, successfully lobbying for a Community Prosecutor to address quality-of-life issues on a neighborhood level, creating the Frogtown Four Seasons program, which hired and coached hard-to-employ residents in a lawn/snow service business, organizing an annual 30 Days of Hope celebration that drew elected officials, department heads and residents to events that highlighted victories and needs in Frogtown, lobbying elected officials to pass excessive consumption of police service and dangerous dog regulations, and founding a neighborhood-based youth leadership academy.
“I’ve known Johnny for over 15 years, and he’s never stopped working for his community.” Roger Meyer, former Green Party candidate for Mayor, added. “He’s a candidate who will stand up to the status quo and push us all towards a more just and sustainable city. He doesn’t just talk about adding jobs, making green space, or organizing people to make change – he has a history of doing it. Ward One will benefit from his energy, commitment and interest in creating a Ward One that works for everyone.”
Howard is a father of four, and has been married to Diane Howard for 30 years. He is a member of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church and serves on the usher board. Howard has received numerous awards, including the St. Paul Companies Leadership Award, the Urban League Man of the Year Award, and the William H. Spurgeon Award.
“I’ve got a solid record of working hard and creatively to make Ward One a better place to live,” said Howard. “This is a new time, with different opportunities and challenges. But my record shows that I know how to bring all of Ward One together to build a great neighborhood.”
