St. Paul, Minn. – The Hmong community will conduct the last cultural tribute to the late General Vang Pao with a three-day soul release ceremony over Memorial Day Weekend.
The Midwest States Hmong-American Communities have organized the Soul Release (Tso-Plig) Ceremony for May 27, 28 & 29 at Legacy Funeral Home Service Center, 255 Eaten Street, St. Paul, MN 55107 (just off Highway 52 and Plato)
The program commences on Friday, May 27, at 9:00 a.m. A parade running several blocks to the funeral home will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by modern and tradition cultural performances. Dignitaries and guest speakers will also be present to speak at the event.
On May 28th there will be an opportunity for organization and delegation representatives to speak and pay respects on General Vang Pao’s soul.
In the Hmong culture, the ‘Tso-Plig’ ceremony is the final step to completing the funeral procession. The Hmong believe that without this ceremony, the spirit of the deceased person will linger around unhappily and cause unrest to his family such as illness.
“More importantly, this ceremony will allow General Vang Pao’s soul to reunite with his ancestors,” said Mr. Xai Nou Vang, chairman of the ceremony’s Planning Committees. “So he could be reincarnated again.”
The ceremony also provides family members, relatives, and friends the last opportunity to say good-bye to the late General’s Soul. “This is the final tribute for the people to pay their respects and say farewell to our beloved leader,” said former Major Cher Cha Vang, who also serves as an adviser to the ceremony.
According to the planning committees in charge of the ceremony, they are expecting people in the thousands to attend this three-day ceremony.
“We have local and state public officials who will also be attending the ‘Tso-Plig’,” stated Mr. Xai Nou Vang.
The public officials expected to give their condolences at the ‘Tso-Plig’ ceremony include Ramsey County Judge John Choi, State Sen. John Harrington, House Reps. Rena Moran and John Lesch, Ramsey County Sheriff Chief Matt Bostrom, President of Concordia University – St. Paul Dr. Robert Holst, Maj. Gen. Larry Taylor of the US Marine Corps, former Chief of Police of Laos’ Military Region II Col. Yang Chao and others.
